If you are adventurous, try taking public buses when you are holidaying in Singapore.
The bus service of the country covers the whole island, and is the most affordable means of transport. It brings you to places that are close to the ordinary Singaporeans, including the various housing estates, known as HDB estates.
To save time and money, you should combine your bus trips with the MRT. The bus service is integrated with the MRT, and you can go to practically any corner of Singapore pretty efficiently.
The buses are clean, comfortable and air-conditioned.

If you are unsure of the fare, ask the bus driver or refer to the information panels at the bus stops and interchanges. You can also refer to the bus map.
Do note that if you are paying the bus fare by cash, it has to be exact change. Upon inserting the money into the ticket dispenser, remember to collect the paper ticket.
My suggestion is you get The Singapore Tourist Pass, which allows you unlimited travel on the MRT and basic bus services.
