If you are a smoker, beware of the smoking rules in Singapore.
Smoking is not totally banned in the country. But it is not allowed in many places.
Some establishments, such as the neighborhood coffee shops, have special sections meant for smoking. Beyond those sections — absolutely no smoking.
Generally, places where smoking is not allowed include public service vehicles, museums, libraries, lifts, theaters, cinemas, air-conditioned restaurants, non-airconditioned eating houses, hawker centers, hair salons, supermarkets, department stores and government offices.
Even in night spots like pubs, discos, karaoke bars and nightspots, unless within approved smoking rooms or smoking corners, smoking is restricted.
Offenders can be fined up to SGD 1,000.
For your reference, from 1st January 2009, smoking is also prohibited at:
- Indoor public places (eg. shops, shopping/neighbourhood centres, factories, offices) regardless of whether they are air-conditioned;
- Lift and hotel lobbies;
- Within 5 metres of entrances and exits to indoor area of buildings and facilities where smoking is prohibited;
- Playgrounds and exercise areas;
- Markets;
- Multi-storey and basement car parks;
- Ferry Terminals
